The Power of Being Watched: How Accountability Boosts Performance

There’s an interesting and amusing phenomenon that I’ve observed over and over in the years I’ve been a coach. Often when I come nearer to an athlete in my gym, they tend to work harder. They might stop resting during a conditioning piece and get to it or move a little faster.

When I’m not coaching but I’m taking some class pics and videos of class, folks move faster and with more purpose when they’re being filmed.

We work harder and perform better when we’re being observed- it’s the Hawthorne Effect.

The Hawthorne Effect refers to the phenomenon where individuals alter their behavior in response to being observed. This concept originated from studies conducted at the Hawthorne Works factory in the 1920s and 1930s, where researchers found that workers' productivity increased when they were aware they were being watched.

Workers at the Hawthorne Works showed improved performance when they knew they were part of an experiment, regardless of the changes made to their working conditions. The mere fact of being observed led to changes in behavior, as individuals often wanted to meet or exceed expectations.

The Hawthorne Effect shows that attention and feedback can significantly influence performance and motivation.

People tend to perform better in environments where someone is watching. This obviously applies to fitness performance: Time after time, people who join Beo after working out on their own for a time report that they are working harder, lifting heavier, and moving faster in our gym. We know this isn’t just because our programming is more different- it’s because a coach and fellow gym members are around. Other people are watching.

This applies to Beo Nutrition coaching, too- we’re far more likely to stay on plan with our nutrition when we know a coach is holding us accountable. Those check-in’s are priceless!

By incorporating accountability and guidance into our coaching philosophy, Beo helps you stay committed, motivated, and excited about your fitness journey. Our members consistently report higher levels of satisfaction and better results because they feel supported and recognized in a positive way.
