We’ve got a big couple of weeks at Beo…
Max lift testing is coming up next week…
And Murph is right around the corner!
It’s the perfect time to talk about something that makes a huge difference in both performance and recovery:
How to fuel your workouts to kick butt… and not feel like poo!
A lot of people focus entirely on the workout itself, but what you eat before and after training matters too. You don’t need a complicated nutrition plan or perfect meal prep to feel stronger, recover better, and have more energy in the gym. A few simple habits can make a huge difference.
Food Is Fuel
Your body needs energy to:
- lift heavy
- recover well
- build strength
- improve endurance
- maintain muscle
- and keep your energy up throughout the day
When you fuel well, workouts tend to feel better. Energy improves. Recovery improves. Performance improves.
And honestly? Training is way more fun!
If You Have 2-3 Hours Before Your Workout
This is the ideal window for a larger meal.
Aim for:
- protein
- carbohydrates
- some healthy fat
- foods you digest well
Some great options:
- Chicken, rice, and fruit
- Eggs and oatmeal
- Greek yogurt with berries and granola
- Turkey sandwich and fruit
- Rice bowl with lean protein
Carbohydrates are especially helpful before harder workouts and max lift days because they help fuel your muscles for higher intensity effort.
This is also enough time for your body to digest a meal that contains a little more fat and fiber without it sitting heavy during your workout.
If You Only Have About an Hour
Now we want to keep things lighter and easier to digest.
At this point, focus mostly on carbohydrates and a little protein while keeping fat and fiber fairly low. Foods with more fat and fiber are great other times but digest more slowly and can leave you feeling sluggish or uncomfortable during training.
Good options:
- Banana and a protein shake
- Greek yogurt and fruit
- Toast with honey or jam
- Applesauce and a protein shake
- Rice cakes with turkey
- A protein bar and fruit
- Cereal and milk
- Pretzels and a shake
This gives you quick energy without feeling overly full during your workout. If you don’t like to eat much pre-workout but you can handle a little something, prioritize quick carbs like half of a ripe banana or a Rice Krispy bar.
And don’t forget to hydrate! Water matters more than most people realize when it comes to both strength and conditioning performance.
What About Early Morning Workouts?
Some people feel great training fasted. Others feel much better with at least a little fuel beforehand.
If you train early and don’t want a full meal, even something small can help:
- half a banana
- toast
- a small shake
- applesauce
- or a few bites of something easy to digest
You do not need a huge breakfast at 5am to have a good workout. But a little fuel can absolutely help energy and performance for many people. Don’t like to eat early in the morning before a workout? Consider a small pre-bed snack to fuel your morning WOD.
Fueling for Max Lift Week
If you want to feel strong under the bar, don’t show up under-fueled.
For your best 1RM lift:
- stay hydrated
- get enough protein overall
- and avoid skipping meals because
Strength performance tends to improve when your body actually has energy available to use. Weird, right?
Fueling for Murph
Murph is a longer effort, which means fueling and hydration become even more important.
The day before:
- hydrate well
- eat balanced meals
- include carbs
- don’t under-eat
The morning of:
- eat carbohydrates
- include some protein if you can tolerate it
- keep fat and fiber lower if you’re eating closer to the workout
- drink water
- consider electrolytes if you sweat heavily
And afterward? Eat a balanced meal to help recovery.
Your Overall Nutrition Matters Most
Pre-workout fuel is important, but your everyday habits matter more.
The people who tend to feel and perform their best are usually doing the basics consistently:
- eating enough protein
- including carbs instead of fearing them
- getting fruits and vegetables
- staying hydrated
- eating enough overall
- sleeping well
It’s about supporting the work you’re asking your body to do.
If you want to feel stronger, recover better, and get more out of your workouts, start paying attention to how you’re fueling before and after you train. Your body will thank you for it.
